Thailand Aims to Become Electronics Manufacturing Hub of ASEAN with AI
The electronics industry is entering an era where AI plays an unprecedented role. Consequently, Thai manufacturers need to leverage semiconductor, photonics, and Industry 4.0 technologies with an aim to become a regional hub for smart manufacturing.
The Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) projects that the AI industry in Thailand will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 42.4% between 2020 and 2030. It also forecasts that the public and private sectors will be crucial in driving universal AI adoption.
The adoption of AI in the electronics and other manufacturing sectors is a significant step in driving Thailand towards sustainable development, particularly under the Thailand 4.0 policy, which aims to transform the country into a knowledge-based economy by 2050, with AI as one of the key drivers of this transition.
SCB EIC recommends the following strategies to enhance the potential of the Thai electronics industry to secure supply chain opportunities and become a leading manufacturer in the region:
1. Focus on green technologies, including the use of environmentally friendly materials, reducing toxic chemicals, increasing clean energy use, and managing e-waste efficiently.
2. Develop skilled labor through advanced curricula in educational institutions that align with current labor market trends, such as semiconductor engineering, computer science, and software developers, as well as upskilling existing labor groups so they are not left behind.
3. Invest in research and development to build a more upstream manufacturing supply chain, relax legal requirement for highly skilled foreign workers, and provide tax incentives for companies engaged in advanced semiconductor technology to further develop the Thai workforce.
4. The government should prioritize infrastructure development, such as digital and energy infrastructure, and expand tax incentives to cover green electronics businesses, which will help attract more foreign investment in the future.
